More details about Google’s Project Ara revealed at Linaro Connect USA 2014

Linaro Connect USA 2014 event (LCU14)  has started on Monday, September 15 at Burlingame, California, and it will continue till Friday.

In this event, more detailed were revealed about Google’s modular phone system Project Ara

Paul Eremenko, the head of Google Project Ara Team has given a Keynote on the title “What if hardware was more like software? Google’s Project Ara and the democratization of the hardware ecosystem.”

10 Facts about Google’s Project Ara

1. Project Ara is getting developed based on phonebloks’s module phone system concept
2. Project Ara is open hardware platform.
3. Ara phone is expected to cost around $50
4. It is scheduled to be released in January 2015
5. Ara phones are built using modules inserted into metal endoskeletal frames known as “endos”.
6. There will be two frame sizes available at first: “mini”, a frame about the size of a Nokia 3310 and “medium”, about the size of a LG Nexus 5. In the future, a “large” frame about the size of a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be available
7.Frames have slots on both sides.
8.Modules can provide common smartphone features, such as cameras and speakers, but can also provide more specialized features, such as medical devices, receipt printers, laser pointers, pico projectors, night vision sensors, or game controller buttons. And, module can be created by 3D printing technology.
9. Google has partnered with Rockchip for getting cheap SoCs for project ara phones.
10. Google is working with Linaro to provide special edition of Android which will recognize when modules are added or removed on the fly.
