AnnMarie Walsh, former homeless on the streets of Chicago now found comfort in twitter.
She became homeless after being divorced and losing her job with a mail order pharmacy.She is a Mother of two children with lot of helath issues.They are living with their father.
She wrote about her experiences as “PadsChicago” on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and a WordPress blog, mostly using free Internet service through the Arlington Heights Memorial Library or a prepaid hand-me-down cellphone.
“Most of them think that homeless people are all criminals, on drugs, alcoholics,” she told the Daily Herald.They think we don’t try to get out of homelessness and that we aren’t successful at anything. Some (homeless people) have college degrees and because of the economy got laid off.”
She joined Twitter more than two years ago. Walsh uses the @PadsChicago as her twitter account. She is having more than 4,800 followers.The response she received from her Twitter followers made her feel more comfortable sharing her story.
A social worker on Twitter contacted Walsh and helped her to get temporary housing.
Gifts for Walsh come from all directions.Restaurants give her free pizzas and gift cards.
A documentary filmmaker also reached out to her via Twitter and asked her to be part of his project documenting homelessness. Through that filmmaker, she was invited to speak at Twitter’s 140 Characters Conference, being held in Los Angeles in 2009.
Besides telling her followers about homelessness, Walsh tries to help homeless people who ask for advice — such as where to find a shelter in Wisconsin or who might be offering a job for someone with their particular skills.
