MicroSoft Unveils its own Tablet “Surface” with Windows 8 OS

Posted on June 20, 2012

Microsoft has developed a Windows tablet computer of its own design, and it is named as “Surface”. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled “Surface” at a press event.

Surface will run with yet-to-be released version of its Windows operating system called Windows 8. (And, the Initial version will be Windows RT)

Surface will be the first commercial PC that Microsoft has directly designed and sold.

Similar to other Tablet devices, Surface has a 10.6″, 16:9 widescreen HD Display, and it is having front and rear facing cameras. And, Surface brings some new innovations to the Tablets world. For example its cover will act as keyboard.

The Touch Cover (keyboard) comes in five different colors.

Microsoft is famous for its software windows operating system. And, the major revenue is from licensing the Software with major hardware makers. And, Microsoft is NOT having much experience with Hardware except producing Mouses and Keyboard. First time Microsoft is entering into the Hardware design and manufacture. It was forced to enter into hardware as the Apple’s revenue generated from Hardware devices such as iPad crosses the revenue of Microsoft Software Business.

Anyway, many people are saying that Microsoft won’t continue the Hardware business, it is just a trick/strategy to encourage/force the other hardware device makers to use Windows 8 Operating System on their devices so that Microsoft can compete with the Apple iOS.

For Example Acer founder Stan Shih says that Microsoft will withdraw later from tablet market once after making other hardware device manufacturers to use Windows 8 OS.

Microsoft hopes that marketing its own-brand tablet PCs will encourage vendors to offer Windows 8 tablet PCs and thereby help expand market demand for the product line, Shih analyzed. Once the purpose is realized, Microsoft will not offer more models, Shih said. Vendors adopting Windows 8 should interpret Microsoft’s intentions positively, as they will benefit from Microsoft’s marketing, Shih indicated.
