Sony Announces the PS4 (PlayStation 4)

Posted on February 21, 2013

Japanese technology giant “Sony” has officially announced the PS4 at the Sony PlayStation Meeting in New York.

The Sony PS4 will have no boot-up time according to system architect Mark Cerny. Pressing “on” will bring you directly to the home screen.

Meanwhile, downloads can take place in the background, even while the system is off. Players will also be able to play games while they download.

The new PlayStation will have an X86 processor, “state of the art” GPU, 8 GB of high-speed unified memory, and a hard drive for local storage. The PS4 will allow gamers to share their gameplay stream and even remotely take control of friend’s games. Along with the PS4, Sony has unveiled a new DualShock 4 controller which features a built-in touchpad at the center of the controller, and a built-in microphone jack.

Crash Bandicoot creator Mark Cerny discussed how the PS4 was needed to advance from the PS3. “The architecture we chose is like a PC in many ways, but supercharged for gaming,” Cerny said.

The system will have eight CPU cores and a “state-of-the-art” GPU on a single die, offering 2 teraflops of performance, according to Cerny. To show off this processing power, Cerny showed a live demo of Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 running on development hardware.
