Yahoo Acquires Summly

Posted on March 25, 2013

On Monday, Yahoo announced it has acquired Summly the mobile news reader app.

Summly was created by U.K. high school student Nick D’Aloisio, who was just 15 when he built the app in 2011 at his home in London.

Summly is an iPhone app designed to allow users to quickly find news they’re interested in. It aggregates and displays snapshots of articles from a variety of news sources.

“We’re excited to share that we’re acquiring Summly, a mobile product company founded with a vision to simplify the way we get information, making it faster, easier and more concise,” Yahoo! said in a statement.

Yahoo mobile head Adam Cahan wrote a blog post about the deal, as did D’Aloisio, who also tweeted news of the deal:

@summly has signed an agreement to be acquired by Yahoo!! Excited for the next chapter of Summly! Thanks to all who have supported me.
