Norway rejects US request to receive Syrian chemical weapons for destruction

Posted on October 25, 2013

Friday, October 25 – Norway’s foreign minister says his country has turned down a U.S. request to receive Syria‘s chemical weapons for destruction

Norwegian Foreign Minister Boerge Brende said Norway doesn’t have the capabilities to handle the request by the deadlines given so there was no point in continuing the discussions.

“With the understanding of the United States we have concluded that… it’s no longer appropriate to consider Norway as a site for the destruction (of the weapons),” Foreign Minister Boerge Brende said.

He said the decision was made based on the obligations laid out in the UN resolution foreseeing the destruction of the weapons.

Brende said the U.S. is looking at other alternatives but didn’t give details
