An American Startup has developed a Facial Coding Software for detecting emotions of the TV ads viewers. The Emotions data can be used to improving the Ads further so that Sales can be increased.

The Startup Affectiva which grew out of MIT’s Media Lab has developed this facial coding system named as “Affdex” to detect the feelings/emotions such as surprise, amusement,Attention,Concentration, Dislike or confusion of the Ad viewers by monitoring their eyebrows, furrowed brows, smirks, half-smirks, frowns, and smiles using webcams. Advertisers can update their ads based on this facial data so that the sales/conversion can be increased significantly.
Commercial demand for this facial coding system is high as the market for TV ads in the United States alone exceeds $70 billions.
Apart from commercial use, Affectiva plans to launch a software development kit so that other people can develop apps that can help improving education using this technology. For example, it can help teachers to see which students are struggling to learn from the data collected from their facial expressions.
