Wednesday, October 30 – U.S President Obama’s Twitter links were hacked on Monday in the latest attack by the hacker group known as the Syrian Electronic Army temporarily redirected links in tweets by President Barack Obama’s former campaign organization to a video titled “Syria Facing Terrorism.”
An official with Organizing for Action confirmed that the group’s link shortening account was briefly compromised by hackers.
A Twitter spokesman said in a tweet that “The BarackObama Twitter account was not compromised; their link shortener was.”
According to Reuters The Syrian Electronic Army, an anonymous group of hackers who support the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, took responsibility for the attack. A Tweet sent out by an account associated with the group read: “Obama doesn’t have any ethical issues with spying on the world, so we took it upon ourselves to return the favor.”
The Syrian Electronic Army tweeted, “We accessed many Obama campaign emails (sic) accounts to assess his terrorism capabilities. They are quite high.” It showed what appeared to be the Google email account of an Organizing for Action staffer.
The SEA has attacked a series of high profile organisations in recent months, including several media organisations such as the New York Times, CNN, The Guardian and Associated Press.
