Posted on May 7, 2015

SmartPlate is furnished with advanced object recognition and weight sensors which enable it to automatically identify, weigh, and analyze food intake while capturing a complete picture of a user’s overall eating habits.

It is designed by Fitly, the SmartPlate’s maker who won  two-time Digital Health Award, officially kickoffs the smartplate at Collision Conference in Las Vegas. “Our SmartPlate focuses on automating positive eating habits like some wearables have done for fitness habits. SmartPlate allows users to stay accountable, and therefore improve their health and wellness,” said Anthony Ortiz, CEO of Fitly.

It is the  world’s first Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-enabled device that tracks and analyzes everything a user eats. The plate features a clean white surface and  is divided into three sections. Each section has three tiny cameras and weight sensors. Each load sensor can weigh up to 500g individually. Three cameras to take photos of the food it’s loaded with, as well as sensors to determine how much that food weighs. Then queries the USDA database, and sends all the information to an Android app. The algorithms can identify a food with up to 99% accuracy. It gives complete details about calories present in the food. It makes simple suggestions, like switching from white rice to brown rice.

The app  has a scanner that lets users scan in barcodes, in case they don’t have their plates with them when they choose to eat.The app also makes suggestions of meals to order. Important thing in the smartplate is that the food has to be visible so the camera can look inside. It is very helpful  to the people who want to manage a disease or to lose weight. It could also be useful for research on nutrition and health.
