Samsung Electronics have announced that it has developed a new technology to improve lithium ion battery capacity.
They have developed a next generation lithium-ion battery technology which they use a silicon anode; additionally they added thin layers of graphene over the silicon surface to improve the smartphone’s battery life better. The research is published in the journal nature.
“Many lithium-ion battery applications including portable electronics, the energy density is a critical parameter in determining battery performance. Thus the use of commercial Silicon nanoparticles with a simple and efficient conductive surface coating would be highly desirable for its performance,” said in the paper.
R&D center of Samsung Electronics has succeeded in developing a high-density and highly-durable cathode material by coating the strong and conductive graphene on the surface of the silicon to create a kind of protective layer around the silicon.
During testing, as the silicon expands via a sliding process between adjacent graphene layers, they can achieve 1.8 and 1.5 times denser than those of current commercial lithium-ion batteries. This observation suggests that two-dimensional layered structure of graphene and its silicon nanoparticles can serve as a prototype in advancing silicon anodes to commercially viable technology.
In theory, this means that a device with a 13-hour battery life could go a full 24 hours without a charge, due to these new batteries. It’s still in the research phase, so extend our usage time with external portable batteries in the meantime.
According to businesskorea, “Samsung, which has been making efforts to improve battery capacity to differentiate itself from other global smartphone rivals, expects that it could bring a significant change to both mobile devices and the electronic car industry.
Industry watchers said the technology may need two or three years for commercialization.”
This research by Samsung Engineers could double the lithium-ion battery life, thus, paved the way for next generation batteries.
Previous week, Samsung have developed a solution to improve road safety. Their Safety truck with the wireless camera in the front and four giant screens on the back to display its front view to cars behind it can saves the lives of people.
