Microsoft has announced that it will be allowing the Windows 10 users to run Linux command line tool “Bash” from their Windows 10 machine itself.
This this the major change from the Microsoft which was once very aggressive on suppressing Open Source.
Recently under the leadership of Satya Nadella Microsoft is changing very much. Few weeks back it announced it is bringing its Database Software “SQL Server” to its rival operating system Linux.
According to the Microsoft blog post, they built new infrastructure within Windows – the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) – upon which they run a genuine Ubuntu user-mode image provided by their partners over at Canonical, creators of Ubuntu Linux. The result is that you can now run native Bash on Ubuntu on Windows!
You can now run Bash scripts, Linux command-line tools like sed, awk, grep, and you can even try Linux-first tools like Ruby, Git, Python, etc. directly on Windows. You can also access your Windows filesystem from within Bash allowing you to work on the same set of files using your preferred Windows tools or Linux command-line tools:
Microsoft’s this decision for supporting open source is welcomed by the developers. But some of the developers are still not ready to believe the Microsoft’s support for the Open Source Software. Because they still remember how Microsoft killed Netscape browser.
Do you believe that Microsoft has really changed?
