Amazon Key will let delivery people inside your house

Posted on October 27, 2017

Amazon has introduced a new service that will allow Amazon couriers to open your front door and put your package safely inside your home. This new service is named as Amazon Key.

Amazon Prime customers can preforder the Amazon Key In-Home Kit for $250. It will includes Amazon Cloud Cam indoor security camera and compatible smart lock from Yale and Kwikset.

The Key app and actual delivery service will become available November 8th. When a courier arrives with a package for in-home delivery, they scan the barcode, sending a request to Amazon’s cloud.

Once Amazon authorizes a delivery, the company will turn on the Cloud Cam and unlock your door, allowing the courier to drop off your package. You’ll be able to watch it happen live or later via a recording from the cam.

Amazon Key is only available in 37 cities across the US where Amazon Logistics handles the drop-off.

Amazon Key is not integrated with home security systems. On the day of delivery, you will need to disarm your home security alarm.

Walmart Wants To Deliver Groceries Straight To Your Fridge

American multinational retailing corporation Walmart is testing new concepts like delivering packages inside customers’ homes and putting groceries away in their refrigerators.

Walmart is working with a company called August Home, that makes smart locks and other smart-home accessories, to test the new system with few customers in Silicon Valley.

For delivering the items ordered from walmart.com, the delivery person can use a one-time passcode that’s been pre-authorized by the customer to open the home’s smart lock The customer receives a smartphone notification when the delivery is occurring, and can choose to watch it all play out in real-time on home security cameras through a dedicated app.

Delivery person brings the groceries to the kitchen, unloads them into the fridge, and leaves. Customer receives notification that the door has locked behind them.

Walmart says that, What might seem novel today could be the standard tomorrow. It might be a good idea for saving time, but it may create security and privacy issues. What is your opinion about this idea, share your thoughts through the comments.
