Greek Scientists Create World’s Fastest Optical RAM

Posted on June 14, 2019

A Greek research team has created the fastest RAM (Random Access Memory) in the world. It is Optical RAM. i-e It uses Light instead of electricity for storing data.

The size of this RAM will be huge comparing to Electronic RAM.
This innovation will be useful for Supercomputers. It will be breaking the “memory wall” problem faced by computers. Every year the computer processor speed is increasing fast while RAM speed is increasing slowly.
i-e The processor has to wait for significant time because of slow memory. This bottleneck issue is known as “Memory Wall”.

🇬🇷💡Breaking the "Memory Wall"

A research team from @Aristoteleio University of #Thessaloniki invented the fastest RAM in the world – an all-optical RAM cell architecture, able to double the speed of electronic RAMs!

The Greek Researchres have published their research report in the Journal Optical Letters, published by the Optical Society of America.
They demonstrated the first all-optical RAM cell that performs both Write and Read functionalities at 10 Gb/s, reporting on a 100% speed increase compared to state-of-the-art optical RAM demonstrations.
Opitcal RAMs are being projected as high-bandwidth alternatives of current electronic RAMs, raising expectations for ultra-fast operation .
However, experimentally demonstrated optical RAMs have been limited to up to 5 GHz only, failing to validate the speed advantages over electronics.

Now the Greek scientists are able to break that barrier.
