Coactive: Teaching AI to See and Understand Visual Content

Posted on June 10, 2025

A new MIT‑born AI startup is tackling one of the biggest challenges in the data world—making “vision” machines as intuitive as humans when reviewing images, videos, and audio. Coactive, launched by MIT alumni Cody Coleman (’13, MEng ’15) and William Gaviria Rojas (’13), just unveiled a powerful multimodal AI platform designed to transform unstructured visual content into searchable, actionable data.

🌟 Why It Matters

  • Massive Visual Data Overload: Today, nearly 90% of data is unstructured—everything from camera feeds and photos to audio clips. Businesses simply aren’t equipped to process it at scale.
  • Beyond Manual Tagging: Traditional tagging is slow, costly, and often ineffective. Coactive’s AI can instantly scan video, audio, and images—searching and extracting metadata in milliseconds.
  • Real-World Impact: Reuters integrates Coactive’s system so journalists can find relevant images without manual tagging. Fandom, a massive entertainment platform, now automates content moderation, slashing review time from days to mere sub‑second AI decisions—all while staying in tune with policy.

🤝 Coactive’s Vision: Humans + Machines

The name Coactive embodies their core mission—AI and humans working together in harmony. “We want Coactive to be an agent that pulls us together and gives human beings new superpowers,” says cofounder Cody Coleman. Their “AI operating system” works across models—plugging into newer ones as they emerge—offering everything from natural language search to analytics and metadata generation.

🛠 From MIT to Market

Coleman and Gaviria Rojas first connected through MIT’s Interphase Edge program, studied EECS, and collaborated on innovative projects like bringing MIT OpenCourseWare to Mexican universities. After MIT, Coleman earned a Stanford PhD and helped integrate AI at top tech giants before returning to MIT to launch Coactive. Meanwhile, Gaviria Rojas leveraged his data science expertise from eBay.

🔍 What’s Next

In an era where content is king, Coactive is carving a new path in content operations:

  • Enabling deep API integrations for enterprise use.
  • Empowering business users to fine‑tune metadata and analytics.
  • Keeping pace with evolving AI capabilities, all without locking customers into a specific model.

Their platform marks a turning point, where digital content begins to mimic human-level understanding—making it easier to find, moderate, and build new experiences around images, video, and audio.

In Summary: Coactive is building the “vision engine” for the next wave of big data, turning a massive blind spot—unstructured visual information—into a strategic asset. By pairing AI with human intuition, they’re redefining how we see and use visual content in the digital economy.
