Most highways and streets are lit with streetlights at night to ensure safety on roads. But this needs lot of energy even when using more efficient LED bulbs. And, it creates light pollution.
So, Norway is testing auto-dimming streetlights to save energy. A Norwegian municipality has installed the auto-dimming LED streetlights along its local Highway.
These LED lights normally operate at 20 per cent of power – until a car, cyclist or pedestrian is detected along the route. Using radar, the system will turn on each light up to full capacity as someone along the roadway approaches, then turns the light back down once they’ve passed.
