A recent report says that Facebook has acquired location based service provider Gowalla.
CNN money cites that the Austin based company has been acquired by the Social Networking giant Facebook for an undisclosed amount. It also stated that the employees of Gowalla around 32 along with its founder Josh Williams are set to move to Facebook’s Palo Alto, California office. And This team is to help Facebook bolster in its Timeline feature which is to be rolled out to its 800 million users very soon.
Gowalla wasn’t able to knock out foursquare it’s ace rival despite raising millions of USD in the recent years.Gowalla has around 2 million registered users while its counterpart foursquare boast of 10 million users. Recently it discovered itself as a check-in service rather than a discovery tool.
CNN money also quoted a text from a unidentified employee from Gowalla. stating this acquisition as “It’s a perfect match. As far as the big picture, Gowalla’s vision is about people telling stories, and Facebook’s vision for Timeline is about stories about important moments in life.”
Meanwhile in a statement released by Foursquare about this acquisition it reads as follows : “Congrats to Josh and the team in Austin. Here at Foursquare, we continue to focus on building an amazing product and growing our 15,000,000-strong community.”
