Wolfe allows High-Performance Gaming, Video-Editing and VR for Laptops

Posted on September 2, 2016

Your laptop is an incredible device that can do almost anything. You can browse the web, communicate, manage your data, and so much more — but there’s something missing. Sometimes, our laptops just aren’t powerful enough.

Laptops sacrifice performance for portability. For more intensive tasks like gaming, VR, and high-speed rendering, your laptop is held back by it’s weak, mobile graphics processor. Because of this, you’re expected to use a bulky, expensive desktop computer for these tasks. If you can buy an external hard drive to easily expand your storage, why can’t you do the same for your laptop’s performance?

A kickstarter project named Wolfe is trying to solve this issue.
The Wolfe is a desktop GPU that can plug into your laptop. A GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is a computer chip that contains hundreds (or even thousands) of microprocessors, together capable of trillions of operations per second. This makes it makes far better than a standard computer chip (CPU) at things like gaming and 3D rendering.
Any application that can benefit from GPU acceleration will receive a performance increase from the Wolfe. This includes CryptoCurrency mining, hardware accelerated programming, machine learning, AI, and simulation.

The Wolfe contains an NVIDIA GTX 950 GPU – 768 cores operating at 1024MHz, for a peak compute power of 1.57 TeraFLOPS.

The Wolfe provides up to 5x the graphical power of your typical modern laptop – enough to completely support most of your gaming needs.
