Indian Government has started taking steps for forcing the Social media sites such as Facebook to pre-screen the Content generated from Indian users before the content goes online.
New York Times Report says Top officials from the Indian units of Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Facebook are meeting with India’s acting telecommunications minister Kapil Sibal to discuss the issue.
It seems few weeks back Kapil Sibal had showed a Facebook page that maligned the Congress Party’s president, Sonia Gandhi to legal representatives from the top Internet service providers (ISP) and Facebook.
According to NY Times, some Indian cities like Mumbai have already set up special units to monitor Internet sites like Facebook and Orkut for content considered disparaging or obscene. And, India has made nearly 70 requests to Google to remove content between January and June of this year.
It is NOT clear that how the Social media sites and ISP can identify the objectionable content for filtering them.
People are saying that the government of India is very much scared about the recent development of Anti-Corruption Movement in India. The India Against Corruption (IAC group) is mainly using facebook as medium of communication. Anna Hazare is getting the unanimous support from the people through the social media.
